Named after the rare and endangered Oxalis duriuscula, a bulbous geophyte endemic to the Overberg region between Bot River, Heidelberg, and Bredasdorp, this wine celebrates both botanical conservation and terroir expression. Like the delicate flowers of Oxalis duriuscula—which bloom in white, rosy purple, or combined hues with yellow tubes—this Syrah can only be made in this precise place, reflecting the unique character of Gabriëlskloof's terroir.
Three blocks on Gabriëlskloof, 150m above sea level, planted 2003. Previously sold but retained from the 2023 vintage onwards to capture exceptional site potential. Block A1 lies on the transition zone between shale and sandstone, contributing 50% of the blend as a mix of both rock types; the remaining 50% comes from two sandstone blocks. The 2024 vintage was marked by a wet winter and spring, fostering vigorous vineyard growth, while challenging weather during flowering resulted in lower yields. Despite reduced quantities, the 2024 wines showcase intense characteristics balanced by a lively freshness, reflecting the vineyard's robust early-season development.
50% whole bunch fermentation in small fermentation vessels, one punch-down a day, followed by post-fermentation maceration before pressing. Matured for 12 months in 500L French oak barrels (2nd and 3rd fill Vicard and Sylvain cooperage).
Aromas of mulberry, plum, crushed pepper leaf and ocean rockpool lead the nose. The palate shows ripe black cherry, liquorice and black olives, given a savoury edge from clove and cocoa nibs. A fresh, seaweed-like salinity becomes more pronounced with time in the glass, as does a roasted coffee note. Integrated, earthy tannins lead to a long, dry finish.
