Some wines are born from a single place, others from a meeting of minds across regions. Magdalena is the latter—a thoughtful blend that brings together the best of our Bot River home with carefully selected parcels from the Olifants River and Swartland. It's winemaking as curation, each variety chosen for what it brings to this harmonious whole.
The Story Behind the Wine
This isn't just a blend—it's a love letter to South African white wine diversity. We've combined 39% Sauvignon Blanc from Bot River and Olifants River for freshness and aromatics, 35% Chenin Blanc from Bot River and Swartland for structure and complexity, 23% of our own estate Sémillon (planted in 2006 and now hitting its stride), and a touch of 3% Muscat d'Alexandrie from Olifants River for that extra layer of intrigue.
The 2024 vintage gave us everything we could ask for—a wet winter and spring that fostered vigorous growth, followed by challenging weather during flowering that naturally concentrated the fruit. Sometimes the best wines come from vintages that make you work a little harder.
In the Glass
Magdalena is layered and absorbing, combining the fresh appeal of pear, green plum and nectarine with a sophisticated herbal edge of sage, Thai basil and lemon thyme. There's a lightly flinty reduction that adds depth and smokiness—a signature of our winemaking style—whilst quince, ginger and nougat bring weight and richness to the mid-palate. This is a wine that reveals more with each sip.
How We Make It
Whole bunch pressed, 100% wild fermented, and matured in a mix of 400L and 500L French barrels (20% new, light toast). Nine months on lees before blending gives Magdalena the complexity and texture that sets it apart from simpler white blends.
Artist Rod Freemantle captured the spirit of these diverse landscapes on each label, using pigments created from grinding rocks from the actual vineyards. Each bottle literally contains the ground beneath the vines—connecting you directly to the terroir that shapes this wine.
Perfect for: Those moments when you want a wine with real personality—whether you're exploring the nuances with fellow wine lovers or pairing it with grilled prawns, roast pork, or rich vegetarian dishes that can match its complexity.
