Cabernet Franc has always been the noble rebel of the Bordeaux family—more elegant than Cabernet Sauvignon, more aromatic than Merlot, with a personality entirely its own. Our single-vineyard expression captures all of this varietal charm while telling the unique story of our rocky mountainside site.
The Story Behind the Wine
Twenty years ago, we planted this vineyard on one of the most challenging spots on our property—a rocky mountainside where Overberg Shale meets Table Mountain Sandstone. It's the kind of site that makes you work harder but rewards you with something special. Two decades on, these vines have found their rhythm, rooted deep into this complex geological foundation.
The combination of these ancient soils creates the perfect environment for Cabernet Franc to show its true character. The shale provides structure and mineral backbone, whilst the sandstone adds finesse and aromatic complexity. It's terroir that speaks directly through the wine.
In the Glass
The 2022 vintage is everything we love about this variety and this site. Light lavender, mixed herbs and cranberry lead on the nose—those classic Cabernet Franc aromatics that make it so distinctive. The palate delivers a vibrant mix of raspberry compote, ripe black plums and rhubarb that's both sophisticated and approachable. The tannins have a lively, grippy texture that's ideal for counterbalancing the juicier red fruit notes and sweet spice from careful oaking. Zippy acidity ties everything together, creating a moreish, dry finish that invites another sip.
How We Make It
This wine is all about respecting the fruit and the site. Hand-picked into small crates and kept cool overnight before all fruit is destemmed—we want the pure expression of the grape, not the stems. Natural fermentation without added yeasts allows the vineyard to express itself fully. Daily pump-overs until fermentation stops, then a generous two-week extended maceration for structure and complexity. Fourteen months in barrel with 30% new oak provides the perfect framework without overwhelming the wine's natural elegance.
Artist Niël Jonker captured the rugged beauty of this mountainside vineyard in his landscape panels, painted on location to reflect the wild, rocky character of this special site.
Perfect for: Those occasions when you want something distinctive—try it with herb-crusted lamb, duck breast, or mature hard cheeses that can match its aromatic complexity and elegant structure.
