Era René 2024

ABOUT

The Landscape Series showcases our finest vineyard sites alongside select, old-vine treasures. Artist Rod Freemantle painted each label using pigments he created by grinding rocks from the very vineyards where these grapes were grown. Each label literally contains the ground beneath the vines. Era René, our first Bot River Chenin, is named after founder Bernhard Heyns' mother, honouring her legacy of grit and unconditional love.

VINEYARD NOTES

The 2024 harvest was characterised by a wet winter and spring, which fostered vigorous vineyard growth, whilst challenging weather conditions during flowering resulted in lower yields. The fruit is from two vineyards on the farm. The first vineyard (about 50% of the fruit) was planted to Semillon in 2004 and grafted to Chenin Blanc in 2016, and the rest is from a bushvine vineyard planted in 2018.

WINEMAKING

All fruit was whole-bunch pressed and 100% wild-fermented. Fermented and matured in older 400- and 500L barrels. The wine spent nine months on its lees before being blended and bottled.

TASTING NOTE

The nose opens with limes, yellow cling peaches, and kumquat, as well as a delicate white floral note. A weighty, textured palate delivers golden delicious apples, pistachio and a touch of vanilla, all refreshingly cut by zippy acidity and a saline finish.
