The Amphora Sauvignon Blanc is part of our Projects Range—our space to experiment, take risks, and push the boundaries of what wine can be. These aren't your conventional wines, but they're always delicious.
The amphorae themselves tell their own story. Locally made and developed over ten years of patient trial and error, these clay vessels range from 500 to 860 litres. They're porous, with no lining inside, allowing just the right amount of micro-oxidation during maturation. It's an ancient technique that gives this Sauvignon Blanc a character you won't find anywhere else.
The 2024 vintage threw us a curveball. A wet winter and spring led to vigorous vineyard growth, whilst challenging weather during flowering meant lower yields. Sometimes nature knows best—the concentration in these grapes was exceptional.
The fruit comes from two sources: half from our own Bot River vineyards, with the rest from two vineyards in Olifantsrivier. It's a blend of place and intention.
Whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented in those clay amphorae. The wine spent seven months on gross lees without any additions, then we added minimal SO₂ just before bottling. That's it. No fuss, just patience and trust in the process.
This is an alluringly atypical expression of Sauvignon Blanc. Wet stone, passion fruit, and white pear lead the way, whilst a distinctive blackcurrant leaf note on the nose confirms the variety. On the palate, you'll find dried seaweed and a faintly leesy mouthfeel that fills the mid-palate. A zippy, citrus-rind acidity keeps everything tense and energetic.
