Climate & Viticulture
The 2020 vintage offered a welcome break from a prolonged drought in the Cape, with wet but healthy growing conditions. Picking started about two weeks earlier than in previous years, and cool conditions during harvest made for fresh, crisp wines.
Following careful hand-picking, bunches were destemmed and transferred to fermentation tanks using a gravity system, allowing whole berry fermentation. Naturally fermented and aged 18 months in older French barrique. The components of the wine are: Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), Cabernet Franc (20%), Malbec (8%), Merlot (8%) and Petit Verdot (8%).
A juicy and expertly structured vintage that is also earthier than its predecessor. Dark chocolate, black cherry and plum are given heft by leather, pencil shavings and sweet spice. A slightly higher alcohol is matched with fresh acidity, while supple tannins ensure the finish is long. A wine that will age well but is approachable now.
